Why Should You Grow the Beard?

You should grow the beard for the following reasons:

  1. It is Obligatory

– The Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “My Lord has commanded me to grow my beard and trim my moustache” (At-Tabari [Hasan])

– The Prophet said, “Cut the moustaches short and leave the beard.” (Bukhari 5893, Muslim 52)

  1. Acquire the Love of Allah by Following the Example of His Messenger

– The Prophet Muhammad had a thick beard. (An-Nasa’i 5234 [Saheeh])

– Allah says, “There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.” (Qur’an 33:21)

– Allah says, “Say, [O Muhammad], ‘If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.’” (Qur’an 3:31)

  1. It is Part of the Fitrah

– The Prophet said, “Ten things are part of the fitrah: Trimming the moustache, letting the beard grow…” (Muslim 56)

– Allah says, “So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.” (Qur’an 30:30)

  1. Be Different and Distinguishable from non-Muslims

– The Prophet said, “Be different from the idolaters: Trim your moustaches and let your beards grow.” (Muslim 54)

– The Prophet said, “Trim the moustache and let the beard grow, differ from the Zoroastrians.” (Muslim 55)

  1. Avoid the Curse of Allah’s Messenger

– The Prophet cursed the men who imitate women and the women who imitate men. (Ibn Majah 1904 [Saheeh]; Abu Dawood 4097; Tirmidhi 3013)

– The Prophet cursed effeminate men (mukhannathan) and women who imitated men, saying: “Put them out of your houses, and put so-and-so out (i.e. the effeminate men)” (Abu Dawood 4912 [Saheeh])
