Being Good to Neighbours

Neighbours Have the Right to Good Treatment

– Allah says, “Worship Allah and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, the poor, the neighbour who is near of kin, the neighbour who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful.”

(Qur’an 4:36)

– The Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi was sallam) said, “Jibril, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, kept on recommending that I treat neighbours well until I thought that he would order me to make them heirs.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 101, 104 [Saheeh]; Bukhari 6014, 6015; Abu Dawood 5151; Tirmidhi 1942)

– “Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should be good to his neighbours. Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should be generous to his guest. Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should say what is good or be silent.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 102 [Saheeh]; Bukhari 6136, 6018, 6475)

– “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt (trouble) his neighbour. And I advise you to take care of the women, for they are created from a rib and the most crooked portion of the rib is its upper part; if you try to straighten it, it will break, and if you leave it, it will remain crooked, so I urge you to take care of the women.”

(Bukhari 5185, 5186)

– “By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe!” It was said, “Who is that, O Allah’s Messenger?” He said, “That person whose neighbour does not feel safe from his evil.”

(Bukhari 6016)

It Is Worse to Commit a Sin Against the Neighbour than Other People

– The Messenger of Allah asked his Companions about fornication and they said, “It is unlawful. Allah and His Messenger have made it unlawful.” He said, “It is less serious for a man to fornicate with ten women than for him to fornicate with his neighbour’s wife.” Then he asked them about stealing. They replied, “It is unlawful. Allah and His Messenger have made it unlawful.” He said, “It is less serious for a man to steal from ten houses than it is for him to steal from his neighbour’s house.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 103 [Saheeh])

– The Prophet was asked, “Which is the biggest sin?” He replied, “To set up rivals to Allah by worshipping others though He alone has created you… [Then] To kill your child lest it should share your food… [Then] To commit adultery with the wife of your neighbour.”

(Bukhari 4013, 4477, 6001, 6811, 7520; Tirmidhi 3182, 3183; Nasai 4014, 4015; Abu Dawood 2310)

The Nearer Neighbour Has More Right

– ‘A’isha said, “I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I have two neighbours. To whom should I give my gifts?’ He replied, ‘To the one whose door is nearer to you.’”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 107 [Saheeh]; Bukhari 2259, 6020; Abu Dawood 5155)

Feed the Neighbour

– The Prophet said, “A man is not a believer who fills his stomach while his neighbour is hungry.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 112 [Saheeh])

– The Prophet said, “…When you cook a stew, put a lot of water in it and then go and see the people of a neighbouring house and give them a reasonable amount of it…”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 113 [Saheeh]; Tirmidhi 1833)

– The Prophet said, “…If you cook some stew, make a lot of it and fulfil your duty to your neighbours (or divide it among your neighbours).”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 114 [Saheeh]; Ibn Majah 3362)

Be the Best

–  The Prophet said, “The best of companions in the sight of Allah Almighty is the best of them towards his companion, and the best of neighbours in the sight of Allah is the best of them towards his neighbour.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 115 [Saheeh]; Tirmidhi 1944)

Be A Cause of Happiness, Not Evil

– The Prophet said, “Part of the happiness of a Muslim man includes a spacious dwelling, righteous neighbour and a good mount.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 116 [Hasan lighayrih])

– “Seek refuge with Allah from a bad neighbour in one’s permanent abode, for one’s neighbour in the desert will change.”

(Nasai 5502 [Hasan])

– “Oh Allah, I seek refuge with you from an evil neighbour in a permanent home, for a neighbour in the desert can be changed.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 117 [Hasan])

The One Who Causes His Neighbour to Move Due to Bad Treatment is Destroyed

– The Prophet said, “There is no man who wrongs his neighbour to the extent that he forces him until he makes him leave his home who is not destroyed.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 127 [Saheeh])

Killing Neighbours is a Sign of the Hour

– The Prophet said, “The Final Hour will not come until a man kills his neighbour, his brother and his father.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 118 [Hasan])

The Neighbour Who was Not Treated Good Will Complain to Allah on the Day of Judgement

– Ibn ‘Umar said, “There was a time when no one was more entitled to a person’s money than his Muslim brother. Now people love their dirhams and dinars more than their Muslim brother. I heard the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, ‘How many a neighbour will be brought together with his neighbour on the Day of Rising! He will say, ‘Lord, this man closed his door to me and refused to show me common kindness!’’”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 111 [Hasan lighayrih])

The Punishment for being Bad to Neighbours and the Reward for Being Good

– The Prophet was asked, “Messenger of Allah! A certain woman prays in the night, fasts in the day, acts and gives charity, but injures her neighbours with her tongue.” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “There is no good in her. She is one of the people of the Fire.”

They said, “Another woman prays the prescribed prayers and gives bits of curd as charity and does not injure anyone.” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “She is one of the people of the Garden.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 119 [Saheeh])

– “A person whose neighbours are not safe from his evil will not enter the Garden.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 121 [Saheeh])

Give Neighbours Gifts and Don’t Disdain Whatever You Are Given

– The Prophet said, “Give gifts and you will love one another.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 594 [Hasan])

– “Believing women! Do not let any of you women disdain her female neighbour’s gift, even if it is only a burnt sheep’s hoof.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 122 [Saheeh]; Bukhari 2566, 2595)

– “Muslim women! Muslim women! A woman should not disdain her female neighbour’s gift, even if it is only a sheep’s hoof.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 123 [Saheeh])

– “It is not permissible for a man to give a gift then take it back, except what a father gives to his child.”

(Ibn Majah 2377 [Saheeh])

It Is Permissible to Publicly Complain About a Bad Neighbour

– A man said, “Messenger of Allah, I have a neighbour who does me harm.” He said, “Go and take your things out into the road.” He took his things out into the road. People gathered around him and asked, “What’s the matter?” He replied, “A neighbour of mine injures me and I mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He told me, ‘Take your things out into the road.’” They began to say, “O Allah, curse him! O Allah, disgrace him!” When the man heard that, he came out to him and said, “Go back to your home. By Allah, I will not harm you.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 124 [Hasan Saheeh]; Abu Dawood 5153)

– A man complained to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about his neighbour. The Prophet said, “Take your bags and put them in the road and whoever passes them will curse him.” Everyone who passed him began to curse that neighbour. Then he went to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, “How many people I met!” He said, “The curse of Allah is on top of their curse!” Then he told the one who had complained, “You have enough,” or words to that effect.

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 125 [Hasan Saheeh])

All of the Above Also Applies to Treating Non-Muslim Neighbours Good

– Mujahid said, “a sheep was slaughtered for ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr. He asked his slave, ‘Have you given any to our Jewish neighbour? Have you given any to our Jewish neighbour? I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, ‘Jibril kept on recommending that I treat my neighbours well until I thought that he would order me to treat them as my heirs.’’”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 105 [Saheeh]; Tirmidhi 1943)

– Mujahid said, “I was with ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr while his slave was skinning a sheep. He said, ‘Boy! When you finish, start with the Jewish neighbour.’ A man there exclaimed, ‘Jewish? May Allah correct you!’ He replied, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, recommend that we treat our neighbours well until we feared (or we thought) that he would order us to make them our heirs.’”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 128 [Saheeh])
